Suomenlinna

Warmly welcome to the enchanting Suomenlinna! Come and hear what memories and stories Suomenlinna hold within!

Suomenlinna represents a unique UNESCO World Heritage Site, conveniently located just a 15-minute ferry ride from Kauppatori. In “Suokki,” visitors have the opportunity to deeply engage with the history of Finland from the 18th century to the present day. This around 280-year-old sea fortress, characterized as a bastion fortress, has played a pivotal role in all major wars and critical moments in Finnish history. The presence of authentic cannons and tunnels greatly enriches the visitor’s experience. Today, Suomenlinna stands as a vibrant district and is home to approximately 800 residents. During the general tour, visitors will have the opportunity to plunge into remarkable sites, like the enchanting original dry dock (one of the oldest shipyards still in operation around the globe!), the historically rich Castle Courtyard (Ehrensvärd’s resting place), the visitor center exhibition (subject to opening hours), and the delightful Suomenlinna ramparts, which reveal stunning sea vistas.

I am an authorized guide for Suomenlinna. I have undergone comprehensive training provided by the Ehrensvärd society in 2019. It is recommended to allocate a minimum of 90 minutes for a guided tour. Generally, the duration of the tour is approximately 1.5-2 hours. If you just want to wander around or immerse yourself in leisure time with shopping and coffee, you can certainly stay longer on this enchanting island.
